X-men!

All New X-Men #4: D’oh! Read this one after number five the issue ended up in the wrong bag from the comic store.  This issue is alright, it is the link between the first half of the story where the old versions of the X-Men show up and when they start doing something.  Well something besides the current Iceman screaming every time he sees the old gang.

All New X-Men #5: I know I really should like this comic, it is just so wrong in every way.  But I can’t help it.  Showing the Original X-men what they will become with all the stupid story lines that get dumped on this comic because there is only so long you can make a good story.  It is not as if the writers wanted bad but it is a comic book and there are limits.  But especially in this issue we get the collision of the new and old which makes for some good old fashioned and interesting story telling.  It might end in a train wreck or beauty but only time will tell.  My one nitpick is just the evolution of Jean Grey happens suddenly and at a convenient time in the story.

Iron Man!

Iron Man #5: I like the art for the standard cover.  This book ended the first five part story.  While enjoyable the stories were barely linked together at times.  But in the end it was a really good story of growth in the Tony Stark’s character.  The next stop the stars thing was a little hokey.  My question is Marvel really sending all their main characters into outer space or other dimensions?

Batman!

Batman: The Dark Knight is up to number fifteen now.  Batman is still dealing with scarecrow.  I hope the story ark is over now.  Though I thought this was one of the better issues of the set.  Not to spoil anything but I would recommend saving the fake Death for the end of the issue and not the half-way point.

Teen titans & Red Hood and the Outlaws!

The Teen Titans #15: Another Death of the Family Story.  While entertaining and interesting to see the mess from a new point of view I do not think this story was really necessary.  It just seems like a new story in a new comic in order to sell more comics.

Then there is more Death of the Family in Red Hood and the Outlaws number 15: The story ends at the same place as the Teen Titans 15 which was kind of amusing.  I do not know much about this comic as I have avoided it on principle because of what the writers did to Starfire (so sad).  Anyway, this issue was good and entertaining.  The story flowed well from one section to the next.  The Joker had some good lines and when put together with the Teen Titans issue makes for some interesting story building on the Joker’s part.  Though at this point I’m starting to wonder how the Joker can spend so much time with each Hero / Villain in all these books.  I ask because he sure is talking a lot and while traps could have been set up over the last year it seems like more work and planning than is the norm for the Joker.

Old School Dungeons and Dragons!

A friend shared this old D&D commercial and I thought what the heck share it with everyone!

Enjoy!

Nightwing!

Nightwing #15 was not bad.  Though it did feel as if the Death of the Family story was just plopped into the middle of the current story line, I guess that is supposed to make it more real.  Not much else to say about this comic.

Batman and Not Batman!

Talon (I’m not Batman) #3: This was a good issue, entertaining a real caper piece if there had been one in comics before.  It is hard to explain without spoiling something fun.  But our Talon friend goes to New York City to save his old girlfriend and things get interesting.

Batman Inc #6: Another disjointed weird story, not really sure what is going on as the story is not consistent with what was in the last issue.  I don’t know, might be time to let this title go (did I already say that?).

All Star Western #15: Was rather disappointing.  This issue was all filler and boring filler at that with no plot advancement.  The new artist vision is lacking in the same quality of detail that was in previous issues.  In essence the artwork sucks; I have friends that do better artwork.  I’m not even going to bother describing the blatantly racists depiction of Native Americans in the backup story.  I guess it is time to stop getting this title.

Before Watchmen Moloch

Before Watchmen Moloch #2: This was an excellent yet creepy story.  J. Michael Straczynski (JMS) is a really good writer.  Moloch was barely mentioned in the original Watchmen comic and to see him fleshed out was a great idea.  Issue number one was Moloch’s life story and this issue was a simple single story of his end.  The story connects in a great way things that happened in the original comic; this I am sure was more of what Alan Moore was hoping for when the idea for Before Watchmen was broached.

Planet of the Apes Catacylsm

Planet of the Apes Cataclysm #5: This pre-movie Planet of the Apes comic has an interesting story.  It is a bit convoluted with politics that might make more sense if I had the chance to read earlier limited series or more detailed background information on the Apes franchise.  It did take a while but at least they have explained why certain apes were acting weirder than normal.  I’m really interested to see how this all turns out.

Nite Owl

Nite Owl number four was really good; it shows what can be done when a real writer writes a comic book.  Someone who is used to writing more than just one liners and quips.  J. Michael Straczynski is one really good writer and even though half the book is just a filler rant that filler rant was really good and moved the story along.  Very good stuff.

Death in Error

Death of the Family?!!  I have been calling the Batman mega story Death in the Family.  Why did no one correct me??? Even at the Comic Book Shop! I did web searches and searching with Death in the Family and was not corrected by Google and got the same results when I tried Death of the Family.  D’oh!

Death in the Family! (Batman Mega Cross-over)

Death in the Family – Batman 15 – Oh geeze, blah blah blah blah does the Joker ever shut up?  Not sure what is up with the extended Batfamily but they seem to be falling for the Joker’s plot.  I am starting to think a real review of the Death in the Family storyline will only be possible once it is done.

Death in the Family – Batgirl 15 – more of the Joker going Blah blah blah blah I have a plan.  Not really sure why Batgirl is just giving in and this story really does not feel connected to the main story beyond the bigwigs said, “Write a Death in the Family Story!”

Death in the Family – Suicide Squad 15 – the Joker just never stops talking his random crap.  Oh he has a plan!  While it is kind of interested to see Harley Quinn not be the total Joker Fan Girl and that she has some growth it is sad to see no change in the Joker.

Death in the Family – Batman and Robin 15 – The story started out entertaining enough, then the story stops so that the Joker can go blah blah blah blah.  I think I spotted a trend there with just use the Joker rambling as filler because well a story spread over all these comics is getting kind of thin.

Ame-Comi Girls

Ame-Comi Girls number three features Duela Dent and even though she is the Joker of this world she has the least interesting backstory.  I was glad when the action shifted back to Batgirl and I like the new Robin.

Ravagers and Frankenstein

The Ravagers is up to number seven and the writers seem to have run out of ideas.  Or maybe they are tired of the on the run storyline.  But you know a story is in trouble when the mysterious precognitive hero shows us a dark future “we must avoid” and it takes half the issue.  I was hoping for better the story hinted at something more interesting, I guess I was wrong and it is time to give up on this title.

Frankenstein Agent of S.H.A.D.E. is up to number fifteen now.  The story is just kind of trippy seventyish Heavy Metal Magazine kind of weird.  But in a good way that makes me wonder if I should have been keeping track of the Animal Man comic.

Marvel and DC Books!

Avengers Arena AA Murder World #1, well that was horrible. Just ripping off a bad Japanese idea stolen from someone else is really lazy. Was hoping for something better but this is horrible (I’m sorry I bought issue #2).

Before Watchmen Dr. Manhattan #3 and I am thinking what a load of crap. Long winded tripe and I wonder why anyone thought this would be interesting. Dr. Manhattan could be one of the more interesting Watchmen he is one with real power but in this mini-series we just get more mental masturbation that made him so uninteresting in the movie.

There sure are a lot of X-men comcis!

Cable and X-Force #1 like many X-comics started out kind of lame. I call it the X-Men whiny. But once past that the story was kind of interesting. It was an interesting way to bring together a father and daughter. I will check out at least the next issue.
X-Treme X-Men 7.1 is another entertaining romp around the Marvel Universe. Now we have Brood, a giant Xavier Skywhale and other fun. I continue to enjoy reading this comic good stuff. It is hard to say more without giving all the fun away.

The Bowl of Heaven

I just finished reading Bowl of Heaven by Larry Niven and Gregory Benford, I have read and enjoyed both of these writers work.  I consider Niven one of my favorite authors.  I liked Nivens’s last book and so thought to give this one a chance.  While not either author’s worst work, this book has issues, several issues that take away from my enjoyment of the book.

First nowhere does in on the cover or description does the book mention it is the first book of a series.  If I had known it was part of a series I would have waited for more of those books to have been published.  Despite being the introductory book in the series there seemed to be a lot of repetitive padding and stretching of the story as if there was a target number of pages to be reached and not a point when the story was done.

Second the book felt as if it was written by two people with little or no effort made to find out what the other had already written.  There are a couple of times when a human discovers something interesting and the reader gets a full description only to have that same discovery recounted by the same person in the next chapter.

Third, a colony ship sent to an unknown world hundreds of years away was sent without colonists trained for military or police work.  They did give the untrained colonists side arms like in any bad science fiction story.   The crew also seemed to lack anyone with any training or interest in first contact with an alien race.  I would go so far as to say I could have advised these fine people how to handle this situation and all I have done is read books and watch movies.  Seriously they just sent down a shuttle with no idea where to land and then panicked when their landing spot was not what was expected.  The authors and characters both seemed to have forgotten at that point that they were in a space craft in low gravity where they could just fly to a better landing spot.

Fourth, aliens! They could have been cool aliens! But the aliens seemed to be mostly ignored.  The alien point of view often felt more like padding than anything moving the plot along.

Anyway, the book is not as bad as this review might make it seem.  I did finish it after all, there are just issues.

Doctor Who Christmas Special!

I just finished re-watching the 2012 Doctor Who Christmas Special.  While the episode did not improve with the second viewing it did remain one of the better Christmas Specials so far.  I have really been digging the sense of adventure and excitement that the writers and actors seem to be bringing back to the show.  The Sarcastic Sontaran butler might be the best sidekick to be over exposed and then hated by the fan base ever.  The new “assistant” is played well and entertaining.  I like it when the Doctor can play against a smart person and is not always talking down to the assistant or the audience.   The entire Doctor sulking in old London Town was rather enjoyable.  Nothing like avoiding people and sulking in the middle of one of the biggest towns in the world, a sure sign he wanted to be pulled out of his funk.  Like I said before I am just glad it was a fun special and that I figured out who the new assistant was before the Doctor did.

Amazing Spider-Man 700

Amazing Spider-Man #700

Well that was horrible.  I do not really know what to say beyond that statement.  The Amazing Spider-man ended a 700 issue run with a horrible horrible final issue.  I could go on a long rant about how disrespectful the story was not just to the character history and story but to the fans of Peter Parker the Amazing Spider-Man.  The worst part is this is all some plan so that Marvel Comics and publish another number one comic in a “new” series hoping to duplicate the popularity of the DC Comics new 52.  The problem being many of the New 52 comics were actually good and more than just a reboot.

It makes me sad.

Happy New Year!

Welcome to 2013!
Trying some new stuff with the new year - stay tuned!
